 Fremont, CA — March 31, 2014 — Silevo, Inc., a California-headquartered solar cell innovator and photovoltaic (PV) solar module manufacturer, and Krannich Solar, a global leader in the distribution and wholesale of solar products today announced a partnership for Krannich to distribute Silevo’s Triex™ high performance, high efficiency solar modules in the United States and Europe.

Krannich Solar will be a premier distribution partner for Silevo’s Triex solar modules, distributing Silevo products across the United States and Europe, making Silevo’s modules available to thousands of customers in these regions. The two companies are in the process of planning broader worldwide distribution to other major PV markets.

Silevo’s Triex solar modules offer efficiencies up to 18.5 percent efficiency with an impressive temperature coefficient of -0.27%/°C. Triex modules provide more power output per given area, compared to today’s conventional crystalline silicon c-Si solar modules, which are typically around 14.5 percent efficient. Silevo’s additional output power significantly reduces the overall cost of a solar system by lowering balance of system (BOS) costs, which account for two-thirds of a conventional system’s cost.

Silevo Develops Industry’s First 355 Watt Solar Module with 72 Solar Cells

Triex™ Technology Delivers Greater Power Output, Reducing Overall System Cost

MUNICH, Germany — June 20, 2013 — Silevo, Inc., Fremont, California-based solar cell innovator and photovoltaic (PV) solar module manufacturer, today announced the industry’s first greater than 350 Watt-peak (Wp) solar module made with 72 of Silevo’s proprietary Triex 156-millimeter (mm) solar cells.

Silevo’s 72-cell Triex solar module measured an output power of 355 Wp in both indoor and outdoor third-party testing by Renewable Energy Test Center (RETC), a TÜV SÜD America’s partner for PV testing. Triex technology, a hybrid solution of proven thin-film and crystalline silicon (c-Si) materials, delivers high efficiency and high energy yield with scalable, cost-effective manufacturing processes.

The Triex 355 Wp module provides more power output per given area, compared to today’s conventional c-Si solar modules, which typically range from 200 Wp to 300 Wp. Silevo’s additional output power significantly reduces the overall cost of a solar system by lowering balance of system (BOS) costs, which account for two-thirds of a conventional system’s cost. With an output of 355 watts, Silevo’s module requires less rooftop space or land, mounting and electrical components are reduced and systems can be built faster and more efficiently, reducing labor costs.

This achievement was made possible by scaling up Silevo’s production-proven Triex solar cell technology to a larger cell substrate of 156mm through R&D work conducted in Fremont, Calif. Today’s production-proven efficiency leaders that produce cells above 20 percent conversion efficiency struggle to scale cell sizes beyond 125mm substrates, due to fundamental limitations of cell architectures and choice of materials. However, 125mm cells create non-standard module form factors that require unique mounting structure and system designs, thereby limiting economies of scale and cost savings. By contrast, Silevo’s hybrid tunneling junction architecture overcomes these limitations to produce greater than 21 percent efficiency on 156mm size substrates. Silevo’s cells can therefore be seamlessly integrated into industry-standard 60- and 72-cell module form factors serving the rooftop and utility-scale market segments.

“Integrating solar cells with greater than 21 percent efficiency into industry-standard module sizes helps to enable the next wave of PV system cost reduction,” said Zheng Xu, CEO at Silevo. “Currently, for typical system designers to take advantage of greater than 20 percent efficiency cells, they must redesign the balance of system to accommodate non-standard size technologies. With Silevo’s combination of standard-size form factor and high performance, a designer can use existing BOS components seamlessly while increasing the output power of the system, leading to a significant reduction in overall costs and a greater ROI.”

Silevo’s successful scale-up of Triex cells to 156mm was achieved through a close collaboration with SunEdison (formerly MEMC Electronic Materials), and its high-performance Silvantis family n-type wafers which enabled Silevo to optimize its cell-processing steps to create high-efficiency solar cells that were then packaged into this 355 Wp module.

Silevo is on track to increase its current production capacity during the first half of 2014 with dedicated 156mm cell lines, which will provide greater than 350 Wp modules in the marketplace.

Thurlow brings to Silevo over a decade of experience creating and establishing some of the most successful sales distribution channels in the solar industry. At Silevo, Thurlow will oversee continued market expansion for the company’s Triex technology, hybrid solar modules that combine high efficiency and exceptional energy yield with a low cost structure.

Thurlow brings a global perspective on growing new business opportunities, developing sales channels and building solar brands. He has worked for notable manufacturers including Kyocera Solar, SunPower, National Semiconductor and Stion. Thurlow speaks at numerous global industry conferences, was elected to and serves on the Board of Directors for the California Solar Energy Industries Association, and previously served on the Board of the National Solar Energy Industry Association. Thurlow has a master’s degree in energy and environmental policy from the University of Delaware, where he studied photovoltaics. He holds his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, San Diego.

Silevo Achieves 22 Percent Cell Efficiency, Ranks First in California Energy Commission’s Performance Testing

Triex® Modules Gaining Momentum on Critical Real-World Performance and Reliability Metrics

FREMONT, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Silevo, Inc., a solar cell innovator and photovoltaic (PV) solar module manufacturer, today announced that its proprietary tunneling junction cell architecture has achieved 22.1 percent cell conversion efficiency, as measured by Sandia National Laboratories with Silevo’s production materials and full-size substrates. This measurement validates that Silevo’s Triex® PV modules demonstrate one of the highest energy densities in the industry. Moreover, it validates Silevo’s roadmap and plan to achieve 24 percent conversion efficiency in mass production over the next few years.

In addition to demonstrating excellent conversion efficiencies, Triex hybrid technology is demonstrating real-world energy harvest benefits: California Energy Commission (CEC)’s test results rank Silevo’s Triex modules first among modules that employ crystalline silicon (c-Si) layers. The CEC compiles a list of top modules, taking into consideration PV-USA Test Conditions (PTC), which classify module performance at a more realistic, real-world environmental condition of elevated air temperature. Typically, modules are categorized by Standard Test Conditions (STC), which are measured at a much lower, controlled lab cell temperature. CEC’s PTC/STC ratio (real-world performance divided by controlled lab environment performance) for Triex modules ranked first at 93.49 percent, thanks to the technology’s inherent value of using materials and a device structure with very low cell temperature coefficients. As a result, its real-world performance is world class for technologies that employ c-Si layers, and its performance ratio exceeds that of all other advanced technologies that employ heterojunction, interdigitated back contact, as well as selective emitter techniques that are being commercialized by players today.

Silevo continues to focus on characterizing quality and reliability performance of its Triex module technology. Triex modules recently passed stringent Potential Induced Degradation (PID) and extended Damp Heat (DH) testing, during which modules are biased at high voltages and also exposed to elevated temperatures and humidity levels. The PID and DH tests were conducted by Renewable Energy Test Center (RETC), a TÜV SÜD America’s partner for PV testing.

“RETC is proud to announce that Silevo has successfully passed PID testing on their Triex modules (biased DH: 85 degrees Celsius + 85 percent Relative Humidity (RH) + negative system voltage of 1,000 volts) for a duration of 1,500 hours with minimal degradation well below required thresholds. Silevo’s Triex modules have also completed extended DH testing with 2,000 hours of 85 degrees Celsius and 85 percent RH, twice the IEC 61215 requirement with negligible degradation,” said Cherif Kedir, senior vice president of engineering and operations at RETC. “Silevo’s high efficiency modules with hybrid solar cells powered by tunneling junction technology have proven reliable, well beyond certification requirements.”

While other solar manufacturers have achieved PID compliance, their products’ exposure times to these elevated conditions ranged between 100 and 200 hours. In Silevo’s case, the technology was exposed seven to 15 times longer, further demonstrating the company’s detailed focus on long-term reliability performance. By combining reliability, high efficiency, high energy harvest and cost-effectiveness into the Triex module technology, Silevo is paving the way to shifting solar PV towards a sustainable marketplace.
